Phone Number Setup

Forward your existing business number, or get a dedicated AI receptionist number.

There are two ways to get calls routed to your AI receptionist. Pick whichever fits how customers already reach you.

Option 1: Forward your existing number

Customers keep calling the number they already have. Nothing changes on their end, and your business number still shows up on their caller ID.

1. Get an AI receptionist phone number from us (this happens automatically during setup). 2. Forward your existing business number to it. Most carriers support this with `*72` followed by your new AI number, or through your carrier's app. 3. Customers call your existing number as usual, and the AI receptionist answers automatically. 4. Cancel forwarding anytime with `*73`, or through your carrier's app.

This is the right choice if you've been advertising a number for a while and don't want to reprint it anywhere.

### Forward everything, or only when you can't answer?

`*72` is unconditional forwarding: every call goes straight to the AI and your own phone never rings. That's what most people want — the AI is your front line.

If you'd rather let your phone ring first and only send the call to the AI when you don't pick up (or you're on another call), use conditional forwarding instead. Your phone rings normally; if you can't get it, the caller rolls over to the AI receptionist instead of your voicemail. The codes depend on your carrier:

  • Verizon: dial `*71` then your AI number — this rings your phone first and forwards on busy or no answer.
  • AT&T / T-Mobile (and carriers that run on their networks): set each condition to your AI number:
  • - No answer: `*61*<AI number>#`
  • - Busy: `*67*<AI number>#`
  • - Unreachable / phone off: `*62*<AI number>#`
  • Landline or VoIP: look for a "forward on no answer" or "find me / follow me" setting in your carrier's app or web portal.

> Important — turn off (or delay) your voicemail first. Your carrier's own voicemail also picks up when you don't answer, and whichever answers first wins. If your voicemail kicks in at 20–25 seconds, calls will keep going to voicemail instead of the AI. To make conditional forwarding work, either disable your carrier voicemail or set its ring time longer than the forward. On AT&T/T-Mobile you can also shorten the forward's ring timer, e.g. `*61*<AI number>*11*15#` to forward after about 15 seconds.

Not sure which to use? Start with `*72` (forward everything) — it's the most reliable and needs no voicemail changes. Move to conditional forwarding only if you specifically want to answer calls yourself when you're free.

Option 2: Use a dedicated AI receptionist number

No forwarding required. Customers dial your new number directly, and the AI receptionist answers instantly.

This is the simpler option if you're just getting started, or if you want to run the AI receptionist as a separate line (for example, an after-hours or overflow number) alongside a number a human still answers.

Which one should I pick?

If you already have a number customers know, forward it. If you're setting up fresh or want a second line, use the dedicated number. Either way, setup takes a few minutes and you can switch between the two later.
